The University of Sheffield has been named as one of the 100 'most international' universities by The Times Higher Education. The recently published list, which celebrates institutions that have demonstrated an international outlook, in turn helping to attract the very highest calibre of staff and students, features the University of Sheffield in 99th place out of a possible 800 universities.

Both the diversity of a university’s student and staff body and the extent to which its academics collaborate with international colleagues are signs of how global an institution is, and these factors are among the 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators that allow Times Higher Education to produce the most comprehensive global university rankings in the world.

The University of Sheffield is a global university with over 120 nationalities represented on campus today. International students and staff play an important role in expanding the University's vibrant and dynamic cultural environment, as well as make a huge contribution to academic life, knowledge and our economic growth as a nation.

The University of Sheffield has already received significant recognition for its award-winning 'We Are International' campaign, designed to show the value of international students across the UK, both from an economic, cultural and skills perspective.

“Our University takes great pride and strength from being a global community of scholarship in which staff and students from over 100 countries come together to discover and understand, addressing challenges which are beyond borders.”

Professor Sir Keith Burnett, Vice-Chancellor

The campaign is now supported by more than 100 UK universities and colleges, the British Council and the Home Office and has involved a number of key events. These have included the commissioning of a first-of-its-kind report to highlight the huge net worth of international students, a unique selfie campaign, and two parliamentary events for the launch of videos to help talented students from across the globe better understand how to apply to study at the UK’s leading universities.

Professor Sir Keith Burnett, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Sheffield, said: “I am delighted that the University of Sheffield has been named one of the top 100 international universities in the world. Our University takes great pride and strength from being a global community of scholarship in which staff and students from over 100 countries come together to discover and understand, addressing challenges which are beyond borders.

“In a world struggling with division, we also provide a precious environment in which we learn from one another and build deep bonds of friendship and respect. We are committed to preserving and enhancing this wonderful asset which brings so many benefits to our region, to the United Kingdom and the wider world.”

Sheffield is also engaged in numerous research projects with international impact, from work to develop a bag which can protect planes from bombs in passenger luggage, to research into methane emissions from the Arctic tundra, as part of a bid to combat climate change. This is in addition to Sheffield’s research partnerships with leading universities around the world such as Zhejiang University, University of Amsterdam and the University of Western Australia.
