On 11 January, we celebrated our postgraduate prize winners in the class of 2022 as part of a special Prize Giving and Thank You Ceremony.

Our first in-person Winter Prize Giving event since the lockdowns of the pandemic was a fantastic celebratory affair, which was enjoyed immensely by all in attendance.

We greeted some of our most engaged and high-achieving students with bubbly and nibbles on arrival before the presentations began, with a welcome from our Dean of the Management School, Professor Rachael Finn. We heard words of congratulations given by Dean’s List winning alumnus Callum Van Dyk, who has launched his career as a Psychologist with the UK Ministry of Justice, before Professor Finn announced the newest members of the Dean’s List. Professor Finn also gave recognition to the academic contributions of our PhD graduates to the School’s wide body of research across management topics.

On this occasion we were delighted to welcome our Associate Dean for Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Development, Professor Carole Elliott, who announced this year’s postgraduate prize winners. We would like to thank all of our prize sponsors for supporting and recognising some of our highest achieving students.

Our Director of Postgraduate Education, Dr Melanie Hassett, then took to the stage to congratulate our Top Performers, who achieved the best average grade out of every single student on their degree programme. Dr Hassett also thanked the students who have contributed to the life of the School in their roles as Student Ambassador or Academic Representative.

The ceremony was brought to a fitting end with an inspirational speech by Dr Graham Honeyman CBE, the former CEO of iconic steel company Sheffield Forgemasters and current Managing Director at Sarach Steel Technologies Ltd.

The Geoff Sykes Memorial Prize was founded in 2012 by colleagues of Geoff Sykes, Lecturer in Business Studies to recognise outstanding achievement on the MBA Programme.

The Professor Josephine Maltby Memorial Prize

This prize is awarded annually for the best performance overall on the MSc Accounting, Governance and Financial Management programme. The Josephine Maltby Prize was founded in 2018 by the family and colleagues of Professor Maltby, a dedicated researcher and lecturer in Accounting, Governance and Finance, who died in December 2017.

The Tony Lowe Prize

This prize is awarded annually to the highest scoring student in the Research Methods module on the MSc Accounting, Governance & Finance and the MSc Finance & Accountancy programmes. Tony Lowe was the first Professor of Accounting and Financial Management at Sheffield and he is considered to be the father figure of the Sheffield School of Interdisciplinary and Critical Accounting.
