It was cheers all round at the Sheffield Alumni in London Network March 2017 event with a focus on the business of brewing.
Guests heard from the brewing and sales experts at Mondo Brewing Company in Battersea, London, who kindly hosted this event for the Sheffield Alumni in London Network as well as offering tasters of thier local products, and hosting our own alumnus Thomas Gill, MD at Stancill Brewery in Sheffield.
Over 40 alumni and friends of The University of Sheffield attended the event at Mondo, founded by Todd Matteson and Thomas Palmer, who both started as home brewers, and between them have a range of experiences in different business previously.
Todd and Thomas welcomed guests by giving an engaging insight into their experience of setting up a brewery in today’s climate, and happily took questions from the audience who were keen to hear about their success, and more importantly, what makes a good brew!
After guests enjoyed one or two taster-sized measures of local beers along with a slice of pizza, Thomas Gill of Sheffield’s Stancill Brewery and Economics alumnus, then shared his take on the business of brewing in Sheffield compared to London. All three speakers and guests then enjoyed a thought-provoking Q&A session discussing the differences between Northern and London-based markets, international markets, as well as the success of different brews and beers around the country.
The Sheffield Alumni in London Network will continue this year with an Autumn event, and welcomes any University of Sheffield alumni interested in meeting fellow Economics, Management and Law alumni and professionals.
A report entitled ‘The World’s Best Beer City, A Snapshot of the Beer Industry in the Sheffield City Region’ was produced in 2016 on behalf of The University of Sheffield.
